Cornwall Public Inquiry

CAS contribution deserved better coverage

Cornwall  Standard Freeholder

Letters to the Editor

03 March 2009

Re: Standard Freeholder, Saturday, Feb. 28 "Inquiry's final submissions heard, sessions wrap up".

It is most disappointing that Michael Peeling failed to make any mention of the Children's Aid Society of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (CAS) in the above mentioned article. Regrettably, we were the only public institution that participated in the Phase II oral submissions that Mr. Peeling neglected to mention. We trust that this was simply an unfortunate oversight on his part. In failing to include the CAS, the readership of the newspaper was deprived of the following important aspects of the CAS's submissions:

· A further apology to the former wards who suffered mistreatment in the care of CAS years ago.

· An 11-point outline of the improvements that the CAS has made during the course of the Inquiry, all in advance of the Commissioner's report

· A brief discussion on the impact the Inquiry has had on the morale of the CAS - staff, foster parents, volunteers, and foster children

· Details on the Phase II proposals that the CAS supports and encourages the Commissioner to recommend to the Province

· Several specific needs that the CAS has that it hopes the Commissioner will see fit to support

· An invitation by the current Executive Director to former wards to meet with her or her delegate to discuss their experiences in CAS care

We're confident that in reviewing the above list the Standard Freeholder will see fit to publish this letter to the editor to ensure that the public understands that the CAS has taken the Cornwall Public Inquiry very seriously and has been full participants in the process.

Rachel Daigneault, M. S. W., Executive director of the Children's Aid Society of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry
