Cornwall Public Inquiry

Former Deputy Police Chief Apologizes: Inquiry

June 24, 2008 — An apology has been made at the Cornwall Public Inquiry. Former Deputy Police Chief Joseph St. Denis gave a statement during his testimony at the inquiry yesterday. He began by saying that mistakes were made during child sex abuse investigations while he was with the force which was in the 1980s and 1990s. He also took the time to say sorry. (Hear audio clip below) St. Denis' testimony is expected to wrap up later this morning. Hearings begin at 9:30am.

Meanwhile, lawyers made arguments on whether or not Ronald Lefebvre should be excused from testifying at the inquiry. Lefebvre was an officer with the Cornwall Police Service when child sex abuse allegations became prominent in the area. Details about the arguments can not be reported because they reference personal medical records. Commissioner Normand Glaude says he will decide later this week if Lefebvre will testify.

[Transcript of audio clip: If during my tenure as Deputy Chief of Police I offended any victims of sexual abuse, historically or otherwise, then I do sincerely apologize.]
