Former Police Officer Calls On Province To Help

Local News - AM 1220

November 27, 2008 — A Cornwall Public Inquiry witness says child sex abuse victims need somewhere to turn. Former O.P.P. officer Tim Smith testified yesterday that a number of victims end up with failed relationships and a poor outlook on life. He says there's support for alcoholism, drugs and gambling but there is no support for male victims of abuse. Smith urged the commissioner to make counselling recommendations in his final report. (Hear audio clip below) Smith's expected to wrap up his sixth and final day on the stand later today. Hearings begin at 9am.

“And I would strongly urge you, in your recommendations, sir, to impress upon the government that it is not just the right thing to do, but it’s economically feasible to support those groups that support male victims of sexual abuse, and provide counselling to these people.”

“…. I think that’s the least that can be done.”]

Suicide Fears Worried Officer - Inquiry

Local News - AM 1220

November 26, 2008 — Did allegations of child sex abuse in Cornwall lead to suicide? Former O.P.P. officer Tim Smith has told the Cornwall Public Inquiry he was concerned in 1998 after two alleged perpetrators killed themselves. He says he had grave concerns because as a police officer, his job was to "protect property and life". Smith testified yesterday that he found the situation troubling because the suggestion that someone may be a pedophile can be a death sentence to some. (Hear audio below) Hearings continue this morning at 9am.

how can I do my job at the same time make the arrests that I have to but what can I do to maybe stop these people from taking their lives. Then that -- that wore on all of us, you know.”]
