Cornwall Public Inquiry

Letter To Father MacDonald Questioned

AM News 1220

February 06, 2007 — A friendly letter to Father Charles MacDonald was the first line of questioning this morning at the Cornwall Public Inquiry. A lawyer for the city priest asked alleged victim, David Silmser, about a letter he wrote to MacDonald after the abuse he alleges took place. The content was simply what Mr. Silmser was up to and his plans for the future. David Silmser says he had very few friends at the time and the only person he could talk to was MacDonald. He testified that "Later on, through the years, I had a hard time with this letter. Why I would write a letter like this and I had a few counselors and a few psychologists explain it to me. They said it was very normal that an abuse victim would write a letter like this." Silmser says when he was an altar boy, Father Charles MacDonald abused him. Charges against the priest were stayed 2002 when a judge said the matter took too long to get to trial.
