Cornwall Public Inquiry

Second Emotional Day For Shaver At Inquiry

Cornwall News AM 1220June 12, 2008 — Tearful testimony from a former Cornwall Police Chief at the Cornwall Public Inquiry. Wiping his eyes with a tissue, Claude Shaver described how child sex abuse allegations in the area have impacted his life. During yesterday's testimony, Shaver said if you searched his name on the internet, you would think he was a member of a pedophile clan. But he says he "categorically denies those allegations." Shaver took a few moments to explain how the allegations have destroyed his personal life. (Hear audio clip below) Shaver says the internet must be regulated and making false allegations against people online should be a criminal offense. Shaver is expected to continue his testimony when hearings resume later this morning.

[Transcript of audio clip: I’ve lost personal friends -- I have lost personal friends who told me they don’t believe the information, but they have children and they say it’s better to be safe than sorry.]
