Cornwall Public Inquiry

No Word On Whether Inquiry Witness Will Finish Testimony

Cornwall News AM 1220 August 23, 2007 — The commissioner at the Cornwall Public Inquiry was less than impressed today when he learned an independent medical examine had not been completed for a witness. Last week, Justice Normand Glaude asked for a second opinion to see whether or not Ron Leroux is able to finish his testimony. Leroux is a witness who has recanted statements on the stand. Today, Glaude was hoping to make a ruling but Leroux's lawyer suggested a doctor was unavailable until next week. Glaude noted time is measured by hours and days before granting the delay.
No psychiatric review for Leroux until next week

The judge at the helm of the Cornwall Public Inquiry said today he's "disappointed" a witness won't participate in an independent psychological evaluation until at least next week.

Comm. Normand Glaude had given Ron Leroux until today to see a doctor and have an independent report filed with the commission regarding Leroux's ability to continue cross-examination.

Pradeep Chand, a lawyer acting for Leroux at the hearings, said today his client had not yet seen a doctor, but that an appointment has been made with an Ottawa psychologist and a report may be available sometime next week.

"I am very reluctantly going to grant you that adjournment," Glaude told Chand. "I am disappointed we cannot deal with this matter today."

Leroux's testimony was halted early last week when a city psychologist wrote letters to the commission suggesting completing cross-examination would be detrimental to Leroux's mental health.

Leroux now has until early next week to see a doctor and Glaude said he expected a report to be filed with the commission within a day or two of the completion of the assessment.

The inquiry is continuing.
