Thirty-five people across Ontario face new child pornography charges.

The charges come on the heels of a massive coordinated child pornography investigation by the OPP’s Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet.

In total 122 charges were laid against the accused, who come from a variety of communities across Ontario, including Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury, London and Collingwood.

Charges include sexual assault, possession of child pornography, distribution of child pornography, making child pornography, accessing child pornography and various drug offences. Numerous charges regarding possession of prohibited weapons have also been laid.

Commissioner Julian Fantino says 44 search warrants were executed. He also says two child victims have been identified. One of the victims hails from Ontario and the other outside of Canada.

“Every image of child pornography represents a child victim,” said Fantino in a news release. “Every trading or transmission of that image represents a re-victimization of that child. The police services associated with the Provincial Strategy remain steadfast in their resolve to hunt down these child predators and keep our communities safe.”

In a news conference at the Travelodge Hotel near Pearson International Airport, Fantino told reporters police can only do so much by laying charges.

“We have to have faith in the system, obviously,” he said. “But we are looking for a much more elevated outcome in the system that truly does reflect the brutality of this particular crime.

“It’s still, I think, a societal responsibility that we collectively protect children from this kind of abuse. I think the system can do a lot better.”

Det. Staff Sgt. Frank Goldschmidt, coordinator of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet, said the province-wide sweep and arrests in recent days resulted in the seizure of millions of child porn images.

He said one suspect alone had 6 million images stored on computers and hard drives. “They’re horrific,” Goldschmidt said, describing pictures of sexual intercourse and other sexual images involving children from infants to teenagers.

According to the OPP news release, two more accused are still to be arrested by Peel Regional Police and information relating to their charges will be released later. The child porn investigation is continuing, according to the police service.

The OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Section also encouraged parents and guardians to be proactive when it comes to Internet safety issues.

“Parents and guardians need to educate themselves about the technology their children are using to adequately protect them,” said Inspector Scott Naylor in a news release.

“Unfortunately, most parents and guardians are lagging behind their children in their understanding of web technology.”

The OPP reminds parents that there are some simple steps they can take to protect their children against internet exploitation. The provincial police service recommends that parents be involved and know the child’s online activity. Keep the computer in an open area. Remind children to protect their passwords. Make sure children are cautious when they post online. And know their online friends just like you would their school buddies.
