WHAT’S NEW 

WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY MAY 22 AND 23 – RECEIVING AND HANDLING 

DISCLOSURE 

BY ADULTS OF THEIR CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE 

OR THEIR ABUSE AS YOUNG PEOPLE 

On May 22 and 23, 2008, as part of a series of educational and training opportunities provided by Phase 2 of the Cornwall Public Inquiry, The Gatehouse will provide a training session on receiving and handling disclosure of childhood sexual abuse by adults. The Gatehouse is a response centre for people whose lives have been directly impacted by child abuse. It provides services in Toronto and beyond to anyone affected by child abuse and professionals in the field. The Gatehouse provides a number of unique services designed to deal with the investigation, trauma, survival and recovery from childhood abuse. All services are built on principles that enhance individual resiliency.The two-day training will feature the following learning opportunities for those receiving disclosure of childhood abuse from an adult they are working with: 

- Gender socialization 

- Tracking the historical path of disclosure 

- Managing the flow of disclosure 

- Enhancing resilience through social reconnection. 

The training will involve active role plays and a film by The Gatehouse called Into theLight that gives moving accounts by several “Men of Courage”. 

The workshop is in Cornwall at the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre, 805 BrookdaleAvenue, from 8:30 to 3:30 each day. Lunch is provided. 

This training would be particularly useful to: - therapists looking for new approaches to discussion of the history of disclosurewith their clients; - professionals who may receive disclosure of historical childhood abuse in theirjobs; - volunteers with existing training or experience in the field whose volunteeractivity includes talking to adults who were sexually assaulted, and who wantadditional training in the area of responding to disclosure of historical abuse.
