Cornwall Public Inquiry

Perry Dunlop deserves the Order of Canada Cornwall

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

Letters to Editor

27 February 2009

With the wrap-up of the Cornwall Public Inquiry one overshadowing concern of the community is what of Perry Dunlop?

It is time for Commissioner Normand Glaude to show his strength. In his final analysis of the sexual abuse highlighted within the Project Truth saga, despite Perry not testifying "to the letter of the law," he did present substantial information to the letter of the "right thing to do" under the circumstances presented him.

He surely now must be exonerated and, yes, even presented with a pardon.

Perry Dunlop should receive the Order of Canada for what he had to endure in order to drive home the alleged cover-ups and alleged protectionism of high-profile members of the community that were further veiled over the past three years of testimony. More than this, he especially showed his strength on behalf of the real victims -- those totally innocent, the children who were molested and then forgotten.

It has been difficult enough for our community to be the shame of the country through this process. It would be further difficult if in the end we are left holding onto the shame of it.

Commissioner Glaude, if you are to clear the air, as closing Domtar has done for us, then you must clear Perry or you will leave us with a stigma and a stench that will never go away. Please right the wrongs, all of them.

This is my opinion and I believe that it is the same as the majority of Cornwall and area citizens.

Thank you in for the healing of all, including Perry Dunlop, now and for the future. Dave Windsor, Cornwall

Sorry Dave, as much as Perry Dunlop did have his heart and the interests of the victim's in his heart and thought that he was doing the right thing, he went about it the wrong way. There are laws in Canada that have to be followed, like them or not, and believe me there are a lot of laws that I don't agree with, much has to be changed in the justice system. No the victims who testified at this inquiry deserve the Medal, not Perry if he had followed the law like Police Officers should do then maybe I would agree with a medal for him.

Sorry rkake, but I am with Dave. There are thousands of laws on the books which ones should he choose? Perry's "crime" had no victim. You have to have a "victim" for it to be a crime. Who was Perry's victim? The court? it cannot testify. The judge? how? was his ego hurt? the prosecutor? how was he a victim? Can they testify that they were "damaged?" the laws are supposed to protect our freedom of choice, our families, our homes, our property. We do not protect laws. the laws are to protect us. if the law does not protect us it is no good. Our prisons are full of people with victimless crimes. Where are the laws that should have protected Perry and where and how the H--- do you find them without learning all about the law itself? Are you protecting the "law"? Are you protecting the "system"? If so, you may one day lose all your freedom rights too. I do not agree with you but I will defend your right to believe and say so. It is called FREEDOM By the way "Police officer" is an "office" Perry Dunlop is the living breathing soul whose God given rights and freedoms have been violated under "color of law" and by the way, that laws have to followed whether you like them or not Does that mean the powers that be can make all kinds of laws and we have to obey them? If we do not like the laws, get rid of them and get rid of those law makers who make laws that do not protect the rights of people with victimless crimes. You got a victim? you got a crime. You got no victim? you got no crime. It should be as simple as that. Instead, we have thousands upon thousand of laws, bylaws, ordinances, statutes thrown on us, we the people and there are more coming and forever changing. Please stand up for the individual and not the law or the system They need no protecting

If Perry had follwoed the law like the other officers did and the police chief at the time this would have all been swept under the rug Perry did the right thing which was to expose what was going on. rkake think of the children for a change instead of the reputations of a few people. If all this stuff had not been brought to light the church still would be shuffling pedophile priests around probation officers would still be molesting probationers lawyers would still be advising to give bribes to hush victims up. Think like a human being instead of like a mindless soldier that obeys every order that is issued by his commander.

If the police officers had followed the law like they should they would have reported the child abuse crimes to the CAS. Was Police Chief Shaver ever charged for breaking that law no because he is the all knowing all powerful chief of police. The child protection laws supercede any other laws as far as I am concerned.
