Cornwall Public Inquiry

Bearded Dunlop embraced by family

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

06 October 2008

Posted By MEGAN HARRISON

A bearded, slender, and apparently shoeless Perry Dunlop was released from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre shortly after midnight on Saturday, ending his seven-month sentence on contempt of court charges stemming from his failure to appear at the Cornwall Public Inquiry.

When the Standard-Freeholder reached wife Helen on Sunday afternoon she described herself as feeling "a serious sense of relief " after seeing Dunlop walk through OCDC gates.

"I was just relieved to see he was safe," she said. "We're exhausted, emotionally it's been a nightmare. We just want to get home and see the girls."

Helen said she and Dunlop are staying with friends in the area, and are planning to head back to their home in Duncan, B. C later this week. She added that Dunlop himself will not be speaking to the media until he is "rested and readjusted," and has had some time to reunite with his family. Local inquiry blogger Sylvie MacEachern also chronicled the former cop's release on her website after she joined the Dunlops at a Tim Horton's close to the detention centre Saturday night.

"He had to wear a pair of borrowed sandals - his shoes are among his missing possessions. But no matter, he had something to cover his feet," wrote MacEarchern, describing his first moments of freedom.

When reached later in the day on Saturday, MacEachern also used the word "relieved" to describe Dunlop's state, adding: "He was just happy, I think. Happy to see his wife, his mother, his sister Rosalee. I think he's just looking forward to putting this behind him, getting home, and moving on to the next chapter of his life," she said.

Dunlop was arrested in February after he disregarded a court order to appear at the Cornwall Public Inquiry, which is looking into the institutional response to allegations of a sex abuse ring that allegedly involved police officers, priests, and civic leaders.

After conducting his own investigation into the alleged ring in the early 1990s, the OPP laid 114 charges against 15 men. Only one was ever convicted, and police claimed they found no evidence of a pedophile ring. Dunlop has said previously that the ordeal caused him to lose faith in the Cornwall Police Service and the provincial justice system, which is why he left the city and refused to testify at the Inquiry.

Peter Englemann, lead commission council for the Inquiry, told the Standard-Freeholder last month that he has the power to continue to subpoena Dunlop to appear, which could lead to more jail-time if he refuses, but has chosen not to do so.

"He clearly doesn't want to testify here, and he has his reasons," said Englemann in an interview on Sept. 3. "At the end of the day it seems we will not have his perspective."

Helen, however, said the couple will be cautious before choosing to believe the ordeal is finally behind them, claiming Englemann also said the inquiry would not force anyone to appear.

"People keep asking me if I'm happy this is all over, I tell them 'Ask me in a year,'" she said. "Right now, we don't believe it is over."

Engleman and the judge should be spending time in jail for the waste of taxpayers money for they will have not changed a thing the guility are still running free except those who chose to kill themselves. The others who beat the system by the judge saying it took to long to come to trial, who,s fault was that, the justice system of course and the powers that be who control the system so the quility can be free. The joke is on the taxpayer.

Well, well, well. Yesterday MacEachren was an un-named national sensation -extremely credible - and who had a "website dedicated to the inquiry" and in which Canadian Press scooped their story from. Today, MacEachren is only "a local inquiry blogger". HA! What happened overnight???

....and I see you aree on first name basis with Helen??? Hmmm.

What Justice Nobody was to go to jail as a result of the Inquiry. Waste of tax payers money, definitely. As for change, Let's hold a little hope that it is in the not too distant future

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #7 By itinerant,

It's still so sad that our justice system continues to bleed the taxpayers dry. When it started, "the inquiry" I said it then and I'll say it now...there will be no good that comes from it. Lives will be once again torn apart, there will be no money crossing hands, old wounds will be opened again & again only to be band-aided. Let the wounded heal, let God help them & theirs, and move on. Looking back doesn't fix anything.

This circus of an inquiry is a real joke and a waste of money and the guilty are going around loose and there sure is a pedophile ring in Cornwall. Cornwall is a place where good people leave and leave behind the bad memories of that town. That is terrible that Perry Dunlop had no shoes and things were stolen from him. It is a terrible tragedy that Perry was locked up in the first place and it is the judge and his gang of henchmen who should be locked up and not Perry. There is no justice in Cornwall. I have been reading all about the Masons and where it stems from and what is going on today and judges are all Masons. The church people (Catholic that is) have a masonic origin and all those organizations like the Knights of Columbus, etc. are all secret societies and involved in pedophilia, etc. Read about the Knights Templar and others where these secret societies stem from. There is so much and it would open your eyes. The Knights of Malta who are the Popes henchmen, the Jesuits who have done so much harm and still do, the Black Pope (no he isn't black in color) he is the head Pope above this man. The majority of Cornwall's population are not educated and fall in the pit of the priests and the so called hyarchy of the town. Sheeple wake up, wake up.

Mr Dunlop ,
I want you to know I have been following this case for many years. I want you to know that in my opinion you as a officer you as a man and a father you served your job, country and neighbor. The fact that the Justice system will not stand for you I stand up for you and applaud!!!!
If someone had stood up for me things may have turned out a lot different.

I chose to lookup to you as a fighter for the injustice of children everywhere and this gives me peace.

What did you expect from the Inquiry?

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #12 By itinerant,

I think the expectations, mandate and related goals, objectives, etc., etc. are clearly outlined on the "Cornwall Public Inquiry" website. Didn't everyone expect exactly "what is written" "Itinerant"?
Gee another great post by you "Itinerant". Self=proclaimed "Scrutiny" was correct, you are very diversified.

Tell me some more.......gee...I mean, wow!!!...no, I mean gee!!...no I mean, gee-wow!! How about a word from "2sides" or "scrutiny" a.k.a. "the all wise and knowing "trash heap", from "Fraggle Rock days....ha!! ha!! LOL!!! Love it!!

Dreselda88 looking back exposes the pedophiles and that is the whole purpose of it to make sure people know that they exist and that it could happen again anytime. To say because it did not happen to me dopes not mean it could not happen. Perry did his job he may not be a hero to some people who do not want to believe that this crap went on in our little town but open your eyes and see that it did no matter how much you deny it did. Some people would like to deny the holocaust but it did happen wether they deny it or not. As for me I believe that Perry Dunlop is a hero and detractors will not persuade me he is anything but a hero. itinerant we did not expect the inquiry to jail the person that exposed the corruption that is for sure we expected some truth to come out seems though that anytime the truth was about to be exposed witnesses of great importance were excused for various reasons. Some very high level people were exposed for what they are liars and corrupt people that suppressed the truth from coming out about the pedophiles in our town. Too bad none of them ever served a day in jail for contempt of court after all what else can you call it except contempt when they lie outright to the people and the courts. Anyways this sheet has gone on for too long time to put an end to it all they were exposed and people know the truth of what has gone on irregardless of the denials and such of certain people.

The worst thing done was putting a trial in a place where everybody knows everybody and where the church and certain people run the town like "Boss Hogg". All those who were sexually abused didn't get any justice done whatsover. I always called Cornwall "Dodge City" and that suits it very well - lawless. I am so very happy that Perry Dunlop left Cornwall and I did too along with so many others. We all knew what was going on down in Cornwall for so many years. We all wanted a better life for ourselves and our children and we had to get out of that rat nest as soon as possible. People who are intelligent leave and never go back. The people in the town destroyed Cornwall and will never recover from all the stink whether it be from the industries or the pedophilia stink.

The best of luck to you Mr. Dunlop and you have a wonderful wife and children. You are very lucky in that department and that is something that very few people have. Your brother in law also stuck up for you as well. You are a very good father and husband and be proud of all that. Not many families stay together these days and you are one of the good marriages. Again all the very best to you.

Prior to the inquiry it was all speculation with nothing to back the accusations. If the victim group has a good lawyer there is no stopping them from achieving their goal.

I just hope the lawyers have more caring and respect for the victims then Dunlop did. Meaning when push comes to shove the lawyers do not hide like Perry did. Yes he did the right thing in the beginning but lost his way.

You're story never changes itinerant blame the whistleblower instead of blaming the damn pedophiles. Perry did not hide at all he exposed fully and for that he was punished for opening the can of worms. Perry did his part now the law has to do it's part and people like you have to open your eyes and see the reality of things that Perry did the right thing and what is required by law in case of a child being abused he reported it to the proper authorities and exposed them for what they were. You go on in your own little world believing what you want. The ones that should have been thrown in jail for not doing their jobs were not and the ones that helped cover it up in the church got away with it again as well as the lawyers that helped broker the deals they got away with conspiracy to hide a crime yet none of them went to jail. You don't pee me off anymore i just have pity for you.

Im glad I left that town and for no amount of money ever return to stay.. I look back and see that this place does not have many good memories and over the course of the shame inquiry its just reinforces what most people know that there is 2 kinds of justice in the world, Justice for you and me and other ordinary people and then justice for those with money and conections. And dont say I dont know of what I speak as I have seen it first hand many times and in many different cities here in Canada and across the border in the US too.. Go home Perrya nd rest and regroup with your family.. and hopefully you will be able to put this nightmare behind you one day
