Cornwall Public Inquiry

Dunlop being set free today

Cornwall Standard-Freeholder

04 October 2008

Posted By MEGAN HARRISON

PerryDunlop is going home.

While the Standard-Freeholder has confirmed he is set to be released from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre today, Dunlop's wife is keeping mum on the whole occasion.

Helen Dunlop, who has previously organized public rallies and town hall meetings to draw attention and create support for her husband, refused to comment on the fact that he will be gaining his freedom after spending more than six months in jail for a criminal contempt of court charge.

"This is a private family matter, I have nothing to say to you," she said abruptly before hanging up the phone when the Standard-Freeholder reached her Friday afternoon.

But Dunlop's daughter Marlee, 18, said she can't wait to see her dad.

"The entire community is just waiting for him to come home and me and my girlfriends are making signs," his daughter Marlee Dunlop, said. "It's going to be a riot when he gets back."

Dunlop was arrested in March after he disregarded a court order to appear at the Cornwall Public Inquiry, which is looking into the institutional response to allegations of a sex abuse ring that allegedly involved police officers, priests, and civic leaders.

Dunlop conducted his own investigation into the alleged ring in the early 1990s. Eventually the OPP laid 114 charges against 15 men. Only one was ever convicted, and police claimed they found no evidence of a pedophile ring.

The former officer has said repeatedly that he has lost faith in the Cornwall Police Service and the provincial justice system, which is why he left the city and refused to testify at the inquiry. Others surrounding the Dunlops also offered few details about Perry's release.

When reached by phone, Sylvie MacEachern, who runs a website and blog dedicated to the inquiry, would say only today will be "a quiet reunion" between the couple, and that she wouldn't be going with Helen to the detention centre.

On her blog MacEachern also makes mention of the fact that "there will be a time for those who want to shake Perry's hand or give him a hug . . . (but) for now, it's Perry and Helen."

When asked about the statement, MacEachern claims she meant it in a general sense, saying: "I know he does want to see people, and talk to those who have supported him," but that there is currently no event planned.

"It's way, way overdue," Dunlop's brother-in-law Carson Chisholm, who lives in St. Andrews West, said of the release.

"(He) never should have been put in, obviously."

This is the WORST reporting I have ever seen!!!

Is it any wonder the Dunlops refuse to talk to the Freeholder???

Can't get the scoop from the source - so they swipe statements and comments from one of their young daughters and off a BLOG.

I expected the Freeholder to stoop to try and be the first with the story - well you missed the mark!!!

He's FREE - walked out without the cameras rolling or a throng of reporters...GOOD ON THE DUNLOPS!!!

How do you thank a man who has protected my integrity and my life to this point? How do you thank a man who was willing to be torn from his family to protect those that needed protecting the most? How do you thank a man who held his voice to protect mine? I took the stand and found my voice and Perrys' refusal to participate has kept the focus where it should be, on those that had the courage to speak out at last. They looked for an Achilles heel on him, none could be found! They baited and tempted him, "testify and go free Perry", his silence spoke volumes to me. Warriors don't bend, warriors don't turn and run, and warriors do not comprimise. The truth has been our shield, our comfort and our hope.

To Heather with the angelic smile....your son is free!!!Watching you watching and touching him last night has taught me a new meaning of love.

To Helen with the radiant glow....your man is free!!! Watching you watching and touching him last night has taught me a deeper meaning of love, life and sacrifice.

To Heather, Marlee and Monica....your Dad is free!!! My deepest gratitude to you beautiful young angels. Treasure him!!!

To Perry....YOU ARE FREE!!! Go home and fish, hammer and hunt. How do I put into words what you have done for me? I suppose the easiest way is to say to the detractors....re-read this blog and weep. "Let down the victims"? You have taken the hits to protect us, you have sat in silence so that we can be heard and you never wavered in your conviction. I am honoured and privilidged to have hugged you last night. You have taught me a deeper meaning of love, life, strength and character.

Perry the best of luck to you and Helen and the girls. My prayers were answered of seeing you free but we are never really free of such terrible things that have happened and still happening by those horrible people who run Cornwall. I too have left and will never return except for a visit but never to live again. I wish that I were much further away and you did the right thing. You have an awful lot to be proud of - you have a lovely family and you have good friends waiting for you when you go back home. All the very best to you and your family. I am so happy that I am shedding tears. You are a very good family and I went to high school with Carson Chisholm and I know you are all good people. Forget the terrible things of Cornwall and make a new life for yourselves. That is what I am trying to do. Cornwall is finished for good and I have to erase it all from memory. All the best.

Funny no comment from our local protectors of the accused or the church come on now you must have something to say about this. Any former altar boys that were not molested by pedophiles please raise your hand and have your say so that we can all feel sad for your poor souls for protecting and defending people that were corrupt and guilty as hell. You can't blame Perry Dunlop anymore nor punish him anymore for bringing the truth to light so who will you blame now? You did a great job Perry Dunlop hold your head high and be proud of what you did. God bless you and your family.

John, great quotes from the movie Warriors but not unique.

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #10 By itinerant

Itinerant are you trying to bait me into something? Tell me which quotes you think I have plagiarized. I have never seen the movie but will be glad to rent it. You have been unusually quiet today Itinerant. Please do answer my question as to which quotes, if you are going to bait then at least fight fair. OK?

Roger Dodger..Think before you type...

\There are 49 Google news articles this morning related to Dunlop's release all started from the Canadian Press publication and information swiped from MacEachren's website "the inquiry.ca".
Never credible before and now overnight MacEachren's website has become a sensation and an extremely credible source within the main stream media.

Geez...what took so long???

Perry Dunlop went to jail for apparently "orchestrating" a media circus upon his arrest in Duncan BC in February 2008. The media and the inquiry Gods played up that scenario resulting in his lengthy incaceration on contempt of court charges. If anyone was looking for credible sources to report on what was happening at the time of arrest back in February - then I ask - why wasn't theinquiry.ca used???

Why all of a sudden has MacEachren become so obviously credible???

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #15 By RealityChecker

Itinerant...come on man, you gotta do better then that. You are now quoting me. Tell me the spot in the film, and the quote. When you find it, I will rent it and then apoligize if required. Deal?

Screw-up fairy at work again???

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #17 By RealityChecker

Really, "RealityChecker"!! Sure, use the "screw-up fairy" terminology from the movie "TinkerBells Does Dallas"..can't you use anything original...like, "TinkerBells" is as old as the hills.
My, my, my. Is this an example of "Itinerants" brilliance in multiple and diversified posting.."Scutiny"? Check the workstation beside you...ask for yourself?

Ha. LOL!! Cornwall's finest!!

James....I see that Itinerant will not answer me. Do you have any in-depth analysis as to why this would be?

Reply | Report | Page Top Post #19 By wildone,

Hello "wildone"...and "yes you are"!! Need we really get "in-depth". I think we are deep enough...so-to-speak....I mean, we wouldn't want anyone one to "sink".

Again "wildone", you, like "RealityChecker" earlier and me almost daily, have held the "great trash heap", a.k.a. "Itinerant" accountable for his "bull" and he has refused to "pick up the bat" and walk up to the plate"...instead, he is "Louis the loudmouth", sitting in row "A".

Obviously an example of Cornwall's finest senior management or surrogate. HA!! HA!! LOL!!! Ha!! HAA!!!

Ciao baby.
