Perry's supporters play the persecution card

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

08 March 2008

Posted By McIntosh, Claude

One of the untruths in the Perry Dunlop saga is that the system is persecuting him for his pedophile "whistleblowing" activities.

It's a falsehood that's been around since the mid-1990s, when the ex-city police officer ruffled feathers on the second floor of the cop shop with his unique off-duty investigation of a bizarre allegation that a sex ring made up of prominent citizens had preyed on young boys with impunity.

It's a theme that came up several times during Thursday's Standard-Freeholder phone survey.

The pedophile clan tale has been debunked as a fabrication, recanted not by Dunlop but by its author, an "interesting" character called Ron Leroux, who came across as the quintessential hanger-on.

Dunlop bought the Leroux yarn and ran with it . . . right down a deadend street.

No, Perry Dunlop is in jail because he chose to defy a court order to appear as a witness at the inquiry . . . to give his story and answer some questions from institutional lawyers.

He's not railing at the opportunity to tell his story. Never has. He just doesn't want to answer any questions.

Sorry, Perry. That's not how the game works. As a former veteran police officer that is something you know.

But is six-months harsh punishment?

You bet it is!

Especially when the system hands out softer sentences for more serious transgressions . . . like 11 months for abusing a five-year-old boy. When it comes to contempt, the record shows the courts play hardball. But it's not the system that put Perry in jail. It was Perry.

COFFEE GRINDS

Overlooked by the local media was the passing of former veteran city councillor Doug Warner on Feb. 25. A classy, polished politician who was quiet but effective.

In real life, he was a successful insurance broker and devoted family man with high standards.

His proudest moment on the political front might have been when his son Norm scored one of the biggest upsets in the 1984 general election, won by the Mulroney Conservatives. He knocked off popular Liberal cabinet minister Ed Lumley.

Ottawa Senators' general manager Brian Murray didn't think his coach, John Paddock, was getting the job done so he fired him.

Murray moved behind the bench and has one win in four games, which puts him on track for a worst win-loss record than Paddock.

The man's a genius.

And a little trivia for ya.

Murray, a native of Shawville, Que., was teaching school in 1979 when he applied to coach which junior team?

One of Cornwall's most famous native sons (and pitifully overlooked by the community when it comes to recognition), Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde has set another record long after his death.

Lalonde's less-than-mint condition 1911-12 Imperial Tobacco hockey card sold for $100,000.

Only other hockey card to sell for that much was a mint graded 1911-12 Georges Vezina rookie card.

Lalonde died in 1970 and is buried in St. Columban's Cemetery on Eleventh Street.

Re: Brian Murray trivia - he applied for the vacant Cornwall Royals' coaching job but the owners went with Cornwall native Doug Carpenter, who guided the Royals to the 1980 Memorial Cup, upsetting the Peterborough Petes in overtime.

Murray's Regina Pats won the Western Junior Hockey League championship but didn't make it to the Memorial Cup final.

Just took a look at the crystal ball - it shows Coun. Bernadette Clement winning the provincial Liberal nomination after Jim Brownell retires at the end of this term.

RCMP say the arrest of a cigarette smuggler from Cornwall in possession of a van registered to a resident of Deseronto (near Belleville) at a Dunvegan property is a clear example of the link between smuggling and organized crime.

Sorry, but I'm having trouble connecting the organized crime dots on this one.

Caller to Coffee Break says a lawyer has his knickers in a knot because his client was charged with a (serious) crime by city police.

Lawyer is claiming that since the alleged victim has a family member on the local force, city police had no business launching an investigation that led to numerous charges.

Apparently we have a lawyer who believes that if you have a relative on a police force, you forfeit your right to report a crime.

Maybe this guy got his law degree from the annual law association golf tournament prize table.

Chad Kilger, suspended by the Florida Panthers after he failed to show up after being traded by the Leafs, is losing $12,500 a game.

On Friday, Staff Sgt. Garry Derochie spent his sixth day on the Cornwall Public Inquiry witness stand being examined by lead counsel Peter "The Plodder" Engelmann.

Derochie started giving evidence on Feb. 29 and since the inquiry doesn't sit again until March 31, he'll still be on the stand in April.

At this pace, Derochie, a 32-year veteran, might become the first Cornwall police officer to retire while testifying.

The inquiry is poised to last longer than the Korean War . . . and might cost as much.

Coming soon to the big screen - "Free Perry". It won't be a whale of a movie.

That is the most blanent display of false information I have ever read even from your corrupt mind. Perry was charged and aquitted of improper conduct from the moment he blew the whistle. Its therefore a false statement that the legal system is not out to get him. They tried to get him from the start. You are a disgrace to the human race. You would have our children raped and play in batches of insecticide and you would blindly turn your eye. Your kind is well represented in the institutions of this evil town. How much do they pay you to lie?

Mr. McIntoshDo you thrive off the comments you recieve is that why you do this. Maybe if no one commented he would be as interested in writing false information. You know treat him like you would a kid.

HA!! Oh dear, dear, dear, Mr. McIntosh, you certainly will never "give-up."

FOR years, everyone in and around Cornwall, has certainly learned about your overt "bias", in this matter. AS Perry has been "loyal and faithful" to his "beliefs", you, as a "Columnist" and sometimes, "Associate Editor", have been equally as loyal in attempting to achieve your "objectives". One of the differences is, that, for years, you have had a "publication" to "spread" your "opinion", Perry hasn't. YEAR after YEAR after YEAR after YEAR, you continue to "spin" your "opinion". YET, even though Perry has had NO publication, to spread his "opinion", why does he have the "overwhelming support", love, respect and trust, of the community....and "beyond"?I believe, that this is what angers people like you so much, THAT is, the love, trust and admiration the "community" has always had for Perry, not just now, ALWAYS!!!. For the "clowns who suggest, Perry has his chance at the Inquiry", the "try "huffing" super instead of regular".

How much did you change your life style because you were afraid to go into public? How dare you play psychologist!I have yet to see a diploma of mental health to come from your hands...yet you persist in causing mental abuse to the citizens of cornwall with your constant spin and cherry picking. You of all people need a gag order.

Mr McIntosh, as a journalist I thought you were supposed to be unbiased.... but we all know that is not the case. I'd love to know what Perry Dunlop has done to have you hate him so much, that you bad mouth him every chance you get. I believe PERRY HAS SUFFERED for 15 yrs. His family has suffered enough as well. They left Cornwall to get away from all of this because it was no longer possible for them to have a normal life in Cornwall. His daughter's life was threatened by a crazy woman who went to jail briefly and was out before the Dunlop's even found out that she had gone to jail. Enough is enough. Let the man be, and do us all a favour, RETIRE.

Claude you are part of the system that is persecuting Perry Dunlop. Just because you believe nothing happened does not make it so. go back and stick your head in the sand that seems to be all that you are good for.

Enquiring minds want to know.

I'm from outside the area but I'm sure someone will answer my question. Is this the type of reporting the community of Cornwall has had to endure throughout this ordeal? Is McIntosh the city editor or something?

And... I have to ask after finding freelance articles penned by Claude McIntosh in gay magazines - is he gay??? I don't mean any offence or disrepect to anybody but obviously the issue of pedophelia is a very sensitive subject to alot of people. Also, there's alot of sensitivities that continue to exist around the topic of homosexuality too. As an outsider I have observed alot of hostilities/conflict flying over what is being penned in the Cornwall Freeholder. If McIntosh is indeed gay do you really think it's wise for him to be the main reporter/editor and the go to person on issues of coverup of pedophilia in the Cornwall area. There wouldn't possibly be some type of conflict or biased in his reporting that is definitely coming through in his reports? I really don't think it is appropriate for a gay reporter to be so entroddened in a subject matter as sensitive this. He wouldn't be able to be anything but biased.I'm absolutely stunned this has been happening for so long.

"RealityChecker" Yes, this is exactly the way it has been since 1993 and in my opinion, much, much worse. YOU really must "review" past news clippings and from an "outsiders" perspective, offer an opinion, on how you perceive that the news, has been disseminated in Cornwall. YET, the community is behind Perry. You figure it out. I have had several calls from Cornwall today. THEY say, "what is wrong with this man. There is something seriously wrong."

YOU may wish to "query" Sylvia about past local newspaper clippings and where Mr. McIntosh has done "freelance" work. She has plenty of material regarding the same and as I notice you have blogged on her site. I'm certain she will answer your e-mail.
