Sex assault victim's family making move

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

20 March 2008

Posted By Trevor Pritchard

A Cornwall family has decided to move less than two weeks after learning the man who sexually assaulted their son was living in their east-end neighbourhood.

"If there's nothing I can do legally, then I'm just going to move," the victim's mother said Tuesday.

On March 6, the Cornwall Community Police Service issued an alert that Michel Maybury, 54, was residing in Cornwall.

Maybury had been released last December after serving a jail sentence for sexually assaulting the boy, who cannot be identified.

He had previously been convicted on a number of sex-related offences - including gross indecency, indecent assault, and exposing himself to a young person - dating as far back as 1974.

According to police, Maybury was living in Martintown at the time he was sentenced and moved to Cornwall near the end of January.

The victim's family, however, only found out Maybury had settled a few blocks away from their home after hearing about it in the news.

The mother said she couldn't believe she hadn't been notified that Maybury would be living in the area. She admitted the thought of taking revenge on Maybury herself had "crossed her mind" - especially after police said there was nothing they could do to force him to relocate.

"I'm glad that I have enough smarts to realize that anything I could do . . . would only cause more problems for my friends and my family," she said.

According to a court order, Maybury must stay away from parks, schools, swimming pools, and any other place where children gather for the rest of his life. He is also prohibited from communicating with children over the Internet and working anywhere that would put him in a position of authority over youths.

After the family came forward last week with their concerns, Police Chief Dan Parkinson told the Standard-Freeholder that if Maybury took one step "off that fine line" he would be arrested and placed in custody.

Parkinson said Tuesday that officers had since talked with Maybury about the possibility that he move outside Cornwall.

But with family and other "contacts" in the city, it was understandable why Maybury decided to settle here after completing his sentence, he added.

"If I could wave a magic wand, this person would be living in another province," said Parkinson. "We can't compel him to (move) but we certainly can talk in a rational fashion."

Parkinson sympathized with the family's decision to move and hoped it would give them some peace of mind.

He maintained that officers "were not going to lose interest" in Maybury. The family's new apartment will be on the city's west side, she said.

Regarding the understanding of paedophilia and/or sexual predators, one of the more blatant, ignorant and naive statements, made by Police Chief Dan Parkinson lately, that clearly displays the arrogant ignorance of these "leaders of the community" is, "If I could wave a magic wand, this person would be living in another province." RELOCATION!! Sound familiar?

Congratulations to the victims family, a Cornwall family, who has had to "take hold of the situation" and decided to "move away".
In my opinion, that decision, is a HEALTHY DECISION.
I would also contact my local M.P.P. and demand him to research whether, the family is eligible for financial assistance to "relocate" and "set-up" in a new venue. I believe, this should be made available, if it is not already available, should a family decide to "leave", rather than live a few blocks away from their "sexual offender".

I wonder what the rest of Canada thinks about Chief Parkinson's, "magic wand" idea? Gee, I wonder how many would be "wanded" to Cornwall?
Pathetic!!

If it were my child I would take revenge. There are some things in this world you have to protect. This scum deserves it and i doubt a jury anywhere would convict you of anything. The justice system has gat to start putting these people away forever. They are not fit to ever get out.

these pedophiles never go before a jury they always opt for a judge trial because they know the judges are soft on them. To the victims that have to move I am so sorry that our justice system does not deal properly with these sick mo fos. You are doing the right thing to protect your family because i know if you did anything to this pervert you would definitely get more time than the pedophile did.
