Victim payout was based on legal advice: bishop

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Your editorial of June 5 called for my resignation. I would have done so willingly if I felt that my role in approving the decision to settle the civil action with the alleged victim was in any way improper.

As I indicated at the time in a press conference, my decision to settle the victim's claim was on the basis of legal advice and had I known that the settlement in any way interfered with the criminal proceedings I would not have approved it.

At all times the Diocese and myself were acting in the utmost good faith and on the advice of legal counsel in a manner which we thought was in the best interests of all involved.

Eugene P. LaRocque,

 Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall
