Cornwall Public Inquiry

Phase II meetings start next month

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

Friday, August 31, 2007 - 08:00

Local News - The public's chance to have its say as to how the community can pull itself out from under a dark cloud will happen next month.

A series of neighbourhood meetings focusing on the Cornwall Public Inquiry's Phase II mandate will be held around the city.

As part of its mandate, the commission has been tasked with creating an environment to foster healing and reconciliation in the Cornwall community.

In the past year, an advisory panel has convened a number of meetings with a variety of community agencies and organizations to explore how the community can come to terms with the reality of child sexual abuse and what can be done to protect children from harm in the future as well as help survivors heal.

The meetings will be chaired by Gail Kaneb, a Cornwall resident who serves on the advisory panel. The agenda will address healing and reconciliation in Cornwall, renewal and positive change. The meetings will be an opportunity to look at specific initiatives that have been identified by Cornwall residents, and to ask others in the community what they think about these ideas.

Meetings will be held on the following dates: Sept. 5, 7 p.m., St. Lawrence Intermediate School; Sept. 6, 7 p.m., Royal Canadian Legion; Sept. 8, 4 p.m., The Weave Shed; and Sept. 13, 7 p.m., Viscount Alexander School.
