Commissioner's Report Should Reflect Yesterday's Standards - Inquiry

AM 1220

November 14, 2008 — The commissioner at the Cornwall Public Inquiry has been asked to use yesterday's standards when writing the final report. On the verge of tears, Retired Detective Inspector Fred Hamelink says historical investigations should not be judged by today's standards. The O.P.P. has been heavily criticized for the way it handled child sex abuse allegations in the Cornwall area. Hamelink says he knew he would have to answer tough questions but the inquiry has the benefit of documents and hindsight. He testified yesterday that policing has changed a lot over the years. (Hear audio clip below) Hamelink's testimony continues this morning at 9:30.

[Transcript of audio clip:     “I believe the standards against which the police must be judged in this Inquiry are the standards in place at the time their investigations were conducted. Nonetheless, I have answered the questions put to me to the best of my ability. I know my fellow officers have and will do so as well.” ]
