Cornwall Public Inquiry

Steady public support for Dunlops

Cornwall Standard Freeholder

22 September 2007

Posted By Terri Saunders

As Perry and Helen Dunlop strolled hand in hand down Pitt Street Friday, any attempts at conversation were pretty much futile.

Neither of them could complete a sentence without the interjection of car horns honking at them, people calling out their names and passersby shouting words of support in the couple's direction.

"Glad to see you back, Perry," said a woman behind the wheel of a car at the intersection of Pitt and First Streets. "We're behind you."

The Dunlops never missed a beat, taking a moment to look in the woman's direction and thank her for her support before continuing their own conversation.

"It's good to hear that," said Helen. "It's nice to know people are with us."

For the Dunlops, it's a welcome change from the week that came before.

The couple was summoned to appear at the Cornwall Public Inquiry, something they say they were forced to do against their will. Having to come back to Cornwall may not have been the couple's idea of an early fall holiday, but on Friday they were making the best of things.

They gathered at a diner on Pitt Street where many of their former friends and neighbours convene regularly to catch up on the goings on around town.
