(CP) A 49-year-old Roman Catholic priest was ordered Thursday to stand trial on 11 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency involving nine Cornwall youths. Provincial Court Judge Claude Paris ruled at the conclsuion of a four-day preliminary hearing there was sufficient evidence against Rev. Gilles Deslauriers. The judge imposed a ban on publication of evidence and identifying witnesses. Delauriers, a former chaplain at the city's francophone high school, has elected trial by judge and jury. A trial date will be set Nov. 13. He was charged last July with eight counts of indecent assault and eight counts of gross indecency between 1978 and 1984 involving nine Cormwall residents aged 17 to 21. Crown Attorney Rommel Masse agreed Wednesday to drop four charges of gross indecency and one charge of indecent assault because of insufficient evidence. Indecent assault carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The maximum sentence for gross indecency is five years. End of document.
