Cornwall Public Inquiry

Gardiner: Stop Cornwall Inquiry Sooner Than Later

Cornwall News AM 1220

March 26, 2008 — Councillor Syd Gardiner says the Cornwall Public Inquiry is something that has to "stop...pretty soon." The latest numbers were mulled over last night. From April, 2007 until January this year, over $2 million went to legal costs related to the Cornwall Police Service. However, the province picked up 68 per cent of the tab leaving the city with a bill of roughly $700,000. Gardiner tells AM 1220 News the inquiry is putting pressure on the police force and hurting taxpayers. (Hear audio clip below) The city is still lobbying the province to pay the entire tab.

[text from audio clip: “We have another 15 or 20 police officers we have to prepare for these hearings.  That’s a cost in itself. They’re not on their job so what do we have to do?  We have to put overtime people in to do their work while we’re preparing for a hearing.”]
