Inquiry Costs Cornwall Police Dearly

Cornwall News AM 1220

March 04, 2008 — Two months of preparing city police officers for the Cornwall Public Inquiry has cost the city tens of thousands of dollars. The Cornwall Police Services Board approved payment of $161,000 in invoices this morning. Breaking it down, that's roughly $66,000 dollars in December and $95,000 in January to prep city police officers for testimony. The province picked up the rest of the legal tab -- roughly $275,000. The big number -- what it's cost the police service in legal fees since the inquiry began -- will be unveiled in three weeks. The police will update city council on inquiry costs on March 25th.

The city police's bills for the Cornwall Public Inquiry keep coming in.

The Cornwall Community Police Service board is on the hook for another $153,765 for legal services from Toronto firm, Gowling Lafleur Henderson.

Invoices for December 2007 and last January were received Tuesday at the board's meeting.

These are the costs which will be paid by the city, which is about 30 per cent.

The province is picking up the remaining 70 per cent of the fees, which is $322,024.

As of mid-December, the city police had been billed for $1.4 million since April 2007. About 70 per cent of the costs have been covered by the provincial government.
