Local News - CORNWALL (Staff) – The final phase of construction on the city’s courthouse is expected to begin this week.

The tender for the work was issued earlier this summer and was awarded to a local company, Highpoint Commercial Management Services Inc.

The work will consist of renovations to the existing court building including the addition of five judicial chambers for a total of 11 new conference settlement rooms and the renovation and expansion of the Family Law Information Centre as well as administrative and support areas.

“Access to justice depends on modern, efficient and effective courthouses,” said Attorney General Michael Bryant today. “This investment is part of the government’s continuing commitment to the justice system in Ontario, ensuring our court facilities remain safe and accessible.”

Construction on the project is expected to be completed next summer.

“This government is moving forward quickly on this renovation project and will soon have a modernized courthouse that will provide the services Cornwall area residents need,” said Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont, Dundas and Charlottenburgh. “This facility will serve the region for years to come and shows the commitment to a quality justice system in the area.”

Recently, construction was completed on the first phase of the project. A number of improvements were made to the building, including the addition of two large courtrooms.
