Cornwall Public Inquiry

Another Settlement-Inquiry

July 24, 2008 — Sex abuse allegations against Father Charles Macdonald have led to two cash settlements from the church. The Cornwall Public Inquiry has heard that a second alleged victim was offered cash in the 90's after levelling allegations against the priest. The name of the alleged victim is protected by a publication ban. The amount was not disclosed during Archdeacon Gordon Bryan's testimony. According to Bryan, the cash was for lawyer fees. (Hear audio clip below) More details on the agreement are expected to come out in further testimony. Charges against Macdonald were stayed in 2002. The church did pay out $32,000 to another alleged victim. Hearings continue later this morning at 9:30.

[Transcript of audio clip: I think they were at an impasse and the judge suggested, made the recommendation, that it would be thrown out providing that somebody would assist in paying the counsel for this gentleman.]
