Duncan, B.C. -- A former Ontario police officer who uncovered allegations of a pedophile ring in Eastern Ontario was arrested at his Duncan, B.C., home yesterday over refusing to appear before a public inquiry.

RCMP officers gave Perry Dunlop the option of flying back to Ontario on his own to face sentencing on Wednesday in Toronto for contempt of court charges. Mr. Dunlop was found guilty of contempt for refusing to testify at the Ontario public inquiry looking into how authorities dealt with the allegations of a pedophile ring in the Cornwall area.

Mr. Dunlop refused to go on his own to Toronto and was then arrested without incident by three Mounties. Until now, he has refused to testify, saying he has lost faith in a justice system that may put him in jail.

DUNCAN, B.C. — A former Ontario police officer who uncovered allegations of a pedophile ring in eastern Ontario was arrested at his Duncan, B.C., home Sunday over his refusal to appear before a public inquiry.

Several of Mr. Dunlop's family members were crying as he was led away by police.

About 100 protesters outside the Dunlop home chanted “We love you Perry,” and “We support you Perry,” as he was placed in a police cruiser.

Until now, Mr. Dunlop has refused to testify saying he's lost faith in a justice system that may put him in jail.

His wife Helen waited outside the North Cowichan RCMP detachment in Duncan, where her husband was in custody.

“I just want him to be safe,” she said “They gave him a blanket. He's not talking”.

“She said she wasn't able to speak with her husband at the station because the custody area does not have a space for visitors”.

RCMP told her they would inform her when Mr. Dunlop was to be escorted to Ontario in a situation she called “absurd.”

In August 2001, the Ontario Provincial Police ended a four-year probe into the alleged pedophile ring. The investigation, dubbed Project Truth, concluded the allegations were baseless.

A total of 114 charges were laid against 15 high-profile men in the 1990s, but the courts only convicted one man who had no connection to the alleged sex ring.

The allegations of a sex ring, some of which dated back to the 1960s, persisted until a public inquiry was called in 2005.

    ------------------

Former OPP, Perry Dunlop exposed the goings on in Cornwall, conspiracy and cover- up of top level politicians and police,.......sacrificed his carreer, and endured death threats against him and his 6 year old daughter. His crime???Trying to protect the children of Cornwall.

  1. CD W from Canada writes: There is a ton of monkey business about this and it has to deal with closed court hearings and lawyer misconduct. Lots of faulty memories by lawyers and a judge. False charges under the police act, and this is why Mr. Dunlop does not trust the system. Be very afraid.

  1. James Bateman from Kitchener, Canada writes: 'LAWYERS GONE WILD'
I have been very close to the events since in or before 1993. In my opinion and based on my personal experiences, 'LAWYERS', 'The Ontario Attorney General's Office' and its 'Cornwall Public Inquiry', has seriously 'messed up' everything, since 'DAY ONE'. The Public Inquiry Commissioner Glaude, from Sudbury, Ontario, has written recently, he is afraid of 'anarchy' (believe it or not) and Perry Dunlop MUST be made an example of, so other's will not follow; so much for 'whistleblowers'. Perry Dunlop's arrest is a 'saving face' exercise. (see www.theinquiry.ca). MEET with us to support Perry Dunlop at Divisional Court (Kangaroo Court) 130 Queen Str. West, Osgoode Hall, Toronto. 1000hrs, Wednesday February 20, 2008.

  1. The Bubble from Canada writes: It's so backward in eastern ontario it's not funny, it's why I left, it's my home but you can't help the situation there, if you try you're punished, like I was, like this cop was. it's the home riding of Bob Runciman, PC, supposedly the acting party leader and supposedly the most respected conservative politician in ontario. He's never said a word! The reason this never gets resolved is that the people who are guilty are the people in power. Eastern Ontario has such a long history of child abuse it's gross, don't forget the Christian College in Brockville that is being sued right now for abusing kids, the mayor of Ottawa sat on it's board of directors. The Prince guy who was a catholic priest in pembroke was just sent away for only 4 years in January for buggering 18 kids in the 1960's. The internet child porn bust just last week with all the people from this area. The Crown Attorney's Office of Ontario is the biggest disgrace in Canada bar none. The education system isn't far behind and everyone hides it all, let's talk about the weather. There needs to be a serious reckoning. What they've done to this cop shows how upside down the system is.

    This is scary....
  2. Craig Cooper from Toronto, writes: It's a sad comment when a cop loses faith in the justice system.

Let's close the law schools for a few years until the lawyer herd has been culled.

  1. Machinations ? from Canada writes: Talk to the hand, take your vile trash to some nutcase website please.

I don't see anyone questioning the validity of the former cop's assertions. One must conclude if basing your position from logic instead of emotion that there was no evidence of the kind of pedophile ring that the former cop 'discovered'.

If he wants to protect himself from a contempt charge, the best way is to bring his 'evidence' into the light of the media. If there is any truth to the allegations then the resulting public outcry will help protect him. At the moment, however, this does not look to be a 'whistleblower' - rather an overzealous former police officer who does not know when to quit.

  1. Mark Orr from toronto, Canada writes: Craig, what makes you think the rot is only the fault of the lawyers, the entire system of policing is also broken. Sadly, it will take a crisis, possibly riots and anarchy before the politicians act. Probably like some of the disorder we saw in France and now Denmark....heck if it can happen in sleepy Denmark.......

  1. Rollo Tomasi from Belgium writes: Imagine not trusting the legal system. Been to Family Court?
  2.

Diane Schweik from EDMONTON, Canada writes: As long as we live in a society where most of the legislators are lawyers we will never be free of their malign influence.

  1. Angry West Coast Canuck from Canada writes: So let's see. He's supposed to pay over $400 to fly to Toronto on his own money, pay for his own hotels, and basically get "fined" hundreds of dollars to testify at an inquiry that means nothing. Meanwhile, EVERY OTHER PERSON at that inquiry gets paid, and paid well. From the judge to the lawyers to the "professional witnesses".

    Where's the justice?

Be aware that it's the legislators who make the laws, not the lawyers. The lawyers simply know the law, and know how to argue a case. But if the corrupt legislators we supposedly vote into office had any backbones or ethics, we wouldn't have some of the legal problems this country has. Instead, they're so intent on leaving loopholes in everything that anyone can get a free ride if they know where to look.

So don't blame the lawyers. Most of them are out there trying to save people from a corrupt system. Blame the party politics and our corrupt top-level politicos for not making laws that are reasonable and mostly free of loopholes.
  2. Brad Reddekopp from Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada writes: More people need to refuse to trust the legal system. The corruption is irreparable. What should you do if you are questioned by the police or by a court? Give no answers!
  3.  D. Hall from Canada writes: Thanks 'Machinations ? from Canada'. I know virtually nothing about this situation, but the posters here aren't helping.

Folks, if you've got a grievance, make some rational arguements. Of course venting makes grumpy old men feel better. I fulminations, well they are almost as good as sex at our age.
