Hon. Edward Lumley, P.C Roast Synopsis

(As presented on the Cornwall Children's Treatment Centre website the following is the Synopsis of the Ed Lumley Roast, an October 2002 fund-raiser for the centre.  The Centre was established in 1996.  According to his testimony at the Cornwall Public Inquiry Sean Adams has been actively organizing and/or involved with fund raising for the Centre for most of those years.)

The Hon. Edward Lumley, P.C., a former Federal Cabinet Minister, was the Guest of Honour for the Dinner and Roast in October 2002.  The roasters for this event included:

Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, P.C., the former Prime Minister of Canada

Hon. Mike Harris, former Premier of Ontario
Hon. Brian Tobin, P.C. former Federal Cabinet Minister
Hon. Justice Bruce MacPhee, Regional Senior Justice, Court of Justice
Mr. William J. Fox, Press Secretary to former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney.
with Mr. Hugh Riopelle as Master of Ceremonies

Also attending this event were the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray, P.C. and Mr. Gordon Griffin, former United States Ambassador to Canada.

It was a political who’s who in Cornwall as one of the City’s most famous sons was roasted or, as  the Hon. Ed Lumley put it “...Roasted I think I’ve been burned at the stake!!” However, when the affair was done and all of the barbs tossed, more than $41,000 was raised for the Children’s Treatment Centre.

Paul Martin former Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Tobin former Premier of Newfoundland, Rt. Hon. Herb Gray former Deputy Prime Minister and Mike Harris former Premier of Ontario . Theses were just some of the luminaries on hand to pillory the Hon. Ed, much to the delight of the 400 guests at the glittering affair. Former Premier Mike Harris offered ‘condolences’ to Ed’s wife Pat of 41 years in referring to him as the “stunt-double for the man from Glad.”

“We come not to praise Caesar, but to bury him,” pronounced MC Hugh Riopelle. “It’s proof that if you give the people what they want, they’ll show up. Too bad we can’t hang the son of a ****!” However, Judge Bruce McPhee offered a few positive shots along with his ribbing. “You’re a good sport for taking all of these barbs,” noted the Judge. “I can’t think of anyone else in the community who can gather a crowd like this.”

McPhee was one of a number of a number of Lumley colleagues and political compatriots to mount the podium and share tales about Canada’s former International Trade Minister and Cornwall Mayor. These celebrity presenters kept Lumley and wife Pat, along with the guests in attendance, in hysterics as zinger after zinger were tossed his way.

For Lumley’s part, he took it all in good humour and got in a few shots of his own. But, he turned serious as he spoke of the Treatment Centre. “This Centre is a tribute to the community and it shows how the community is taking care of the children in Cornwall.”

It was a fabulous night and when it was all over, children in need throughout the Cornwall region were the ultimate winners.
