Law Day is Thursday

Cornwall Standard Freeholder
16 April 2008

Lawyers, judges and the Crown attorney will be collaborating Thursday, not in a courtroom, but on television shows, radio stations and phonelines across Cornwall in celebration of Law Day, a day designed to promote the understanding of the legal system's role in our society.

"Many people have only limited knowledge about the law and how the legal process works," said Sean Adams, local attorney and organizer of this year's events. "We think that a well-informed and aware public can only benefit our community."

Local celebrations kick off today with free tours of the Crown attorney's office, located in the Superior Court of Justice at 29 Second St. West, at 2 and 3 p.m.

Those interested in participating are asked to show up at the courthouse shortly before each session to sign up for the tour.

Events will continue on Law Day itself, beginning at 9 a.m. with an hour-long call-in show on AM1220. This year's topic is "family law," and specialist lawyers Larry Fillio and Ted Cassell will be on hand to discuss the topic and answer questions.

Five other local lawyers will also be participating in a Phone-a-Lawyer program from 2 to 5 p.m., where lawyers from various backgrounds will be accepting questions via telephone.

Finally, Justices Johanne LaFrance-Cardinal and Gilles Renaud of the Ontario Court of Justice will be on Cogeco Television from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the law. Renaud cautions that he will not be able to provide information of opinion on matters that are ongoing, such as the Cornwall Public Inquiry, or any active cases.
