Cornwall Public Inquiry

The Inquiry

 Slow Train Coming

Cornwall AM 1220

Commentary by Lorne Wiebe

22 November 2007

Just makes me wonder where the Inquiry will end up. Makes me wonder if most people haven't already made up their minds. Our poll question this week on www.am1220.ca which asked "Is the Cornwall Public Inquiry clearing the air in Cornwall?" was telling. Very telling. The folks in charge of what some have called "the inquisition" should pay close attention. A full 93 percent of the 246 voters agreed with the statement that the inquiry is "off the rails". Only 7 percent say it "is right on track". What the inquiry people need to pay attention to, even more than the numbers, is that the poll sparked not a single email to our editor.

Overwhelming feeling out there that this thing has turned sour and not one email to say more on the subject. I have never seen that happen with any of our polls before where such strong opinions were registered. My conclusion? Folks have given up. Why bother sending an email? Why bother pointing out the obvious? Why bother, why bother, why bother? People have lost faith entirely in the process and have seen the innocent hurt again. And now that this train is well into its journey, is there any stopping it?
