Students from Viscount Alexander School showcased what they learned in artistic form about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Wednesday for local legal officials at the Cornwall courthouse.

The Ontario Judge's Education Network - represented at the luncheon by judges Johanne Lafrance-Cardinal and Gilles Renaud and Justices of the Peace Louise Rozon, Luc Guindon and Basil Marchand -requested students across the province create poster drawings depicting rights and freedoms, such as the right to protest peacefully, outlined in the charter.

"This is a great way to expose students to the judicial system in a positive way," said court clerk Louise Burie, who explained three of the posters will be chosen for submission to the network, but only one will be displayed at the courthouse.

Grade 5 student Sumiha Karunagaran, a member of student council, said she has learned in Canada children enjoy the right to go to school, while in other countries that right is sometimes denied based on race and religion.

Renaud explained to the students the importance of treating those charged with an offence respectfully in court because their guilt or innocence has not yet been proven.
